Recently, I was reflecting how I haven’t had a gym membership in about 4 years. All of the exercise I have done in that time has been home workouts. I remember the day I cancelled my gym membership well. At that point I was tired of the long-term, expensive monthly contract I had, along with the 1-2 hour commitment of going to the gym each time I wanted to exercise. I was sick of waiting for exercise equipment and using the gym daycare for my daughters (who would frequently get colds after being there). They were also getting older and didn’t like to be in the daycare anymore either.
I had worked out at home periodically, but the gym was my regular workout place. I was nervous to cancel my gym membership, but I did it.
Making the switch was stressful in some ways, as I had fears about how I would do without the gym.
Would I get the same health and physique results with home workouts?
What if I couldn’t stay consistent with my workouts if I didn’t have a “place to go” to exercise?
Would I get bored exercising at home without lots of equipment?
I FOUND NONE OF MY FEARS ABOUT WORKING OUT EXCLUSIVELY AT HOME CAME TRUE!! 🙂
WHAT HAPPENED WHEN I STARTED EXERCISING AT HOME
1) I toned up more and got more lean
Why? Mainly because I was able to exercise more consistently and efficiently. My gym workouts became more sporadic because I was unmotivated to get there with the time commitment required at the gym for each workout. Now I was consistency working out multiple times per week at home because I only had to go into the next room to exercise!
2) My workouts became shorter, more efficient and effective
I gave up my 1-2 hour workouts (weights, followed by cardio), for shorter 20-minute metabolic workouts, which combined strength training and cardio in one workout. More efficient and less time commitment. I exercise 3-5 times per week for 20-minutes at a time.
3) I saved money
I bought inexpensive dumbbells from Target and a stability ball. That was the only equipment I used for years. Much less money than a gym membership.
4) My family got healthier
Since I exercise at home my family joins me periodically. My daughters think it’s fun to exercise with Mommy. My husband exercises with me too. We’ve all experienced health benefits together.
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU NEED TO EXERCISE AT HOME?
The fitness industry likes to market the idea we need lots of expensive equipment to get fit. In reality, you can do much at home with your own bodyweight. To get more variety, add my other 2 favorite pieces of equipment, a set of inexpensive dumbbells and a stability ball. If you have resistance bands, that works too, but it does limit you from being able to do some of the moves you can do with dumbbells, so I favor dumbbells over only having a resistance band, if you have a choice of which to buy.
WHAT IF YOU LOVE EXERCISING AT THE GYM?
I’m not villianizing gym workouts. In fact, I did enjoy my time exercising in the gym for years. If you are happy with your gym membership – keep it! BUT, if you are someone who occasionally struggles with getting to the gym consistently or being able to afford the membership contract, know home workouts are a viable option for you anytime in the future.
Have you ever considered exercising at home?
